Newbie or old hand, it’s time to saddle up! Whether you’re out for a freewheeling family ride or want to hit the volcano trails, the best way to explore the breathtaking countryside here is on two wheels. Road racer, mountain bike or e-bike to take the strain, there’s cycling to suit everyone, with plenty of fun and thrills along the way.
You can choose from fifteen-or-so lowland and mountainside MTB trails around Puy de Dôme. These clearly waymarked routes are your passport to discovering the unspoilt countryside all around you!
Accès au départ : Thuret, place de l’église (église St-Martin du XIIe siècle, tympan et chapiteaux sculptés)
Ce voyage au cœur des terres noires de Limagne vous invite à percer le secret du Maître de Thuret qui a légué à la charmante église romane des sculptures originales et personnelles. Viennent ensuite les paysages de grande culture et la campagne multicolore. Maïs, blé, colza, tournesol auront-ils encore des secrets pour vous ? Admirez au passage le petit patrimoine typique de Limagne, tels que les pigeonniers, les fontaines, les bâtiments en pisé, en brique, etc.
Départ : descendre la rue principale derrière l’église (façade en birque sur la droite). A la croix, poursuivre tout droit, sur 1 300 m, tourner à droite, puis à gauche. Prendre à gauche à la croix (vue sur le château de la Canière, XIXe siècle), puis tout droit sur plus d’1 km. Tourner à gauche aux pistes d’ULM et rejoindre Sardon.
1. Grande fontaine à gauche. A l’entrée du village, tourner à droite puis tout de suite à gauche et à droite avant l’église du XIXe siècle, rue de la mairie (possibilité de raccourci). Continuer à droite puis à gauche à la croix, rue du Marlat, laisser un chemin à gauche et un carrefour puis tourner à droite au carrefour suivant pour gagner la D122.
2. Suivre la départementale et virer à droite avant le pont (fontaine de Nailhat à 500 m à gauche). Continuer tout droit jusqu’à la D122. De là, prendre à gauche puis le premier chemin à droite à travers champ. Continuer tout droit jusqu’à la route goudronnée puis tourner à gauche. Garder le cap sur la route qui laisse place à un chemin empierré.
3. A la croix, prendre à droite. Franchir la D443 et continuer jusqu’à la hauteur du puy de Pérozier et prendre à droite. Poursuivre tout droit jusqu’à Chazelles, franchir la D51 et emprunter le chemin de la Canière.
4. Tourner à gauche pour rejoindre la D443. Garder la route sur 250 m (croix des saints-martyrs) puis emprunter le chemin à gauche, tout droit jusqu’à la croix puis à droite rue du pigeonnier (pigeonnier à colombage église). Franchir la D12 pour prendre la rue de l’enclos puis à droite le chemin de Malmort. Continuer jusqu’à la croix de Pruns ; tourner à droite rue des tilleuls (pigeonnier porche et lavoir).
5. Sortir du village par la rue du Buron (pigeonnier) et poursuivre jusqu’à Pérignat (pigeonnier).
6. Au niveau de Pérignat, prendre à gauche, traverser la route et poursuivre jusqu’à Chassenet. Traverser le village (lavoir) et franchir la D210.
7. A la croix, tourner à droite et rejoindre la place de l’église à Thuret (pigeonnier, mur en pisé).
A voir :
• Eglise St-Martin de Thuret (XIIe siècle), charmant édifice roman doté de chapiteaux historiés et d’un linteau en bâtière sculptée. (départ).
• Croix des St-Martyrs à Bussières : selon la légende, lieu de sépulture de jeunes martyrs chrétiens. Passer sous l’autel et votre mal de dos disparaîtra ! (entre 4 et 5)
• Patrimoine rural de Limagne : pigeonniers, fontaines, lavoirs…
Pratique : pas de difficulté, seulement une petite côte entre la D443 et le puy de Pérosier (entre 3 et 4).
Raccords possibles : avec le circuit « Sur les traces des lavandières ». Raccourci possible à Sardon (entre 1 et 2) (9,5 km).
Saint-Bénilde, enfant de Thuret
De son vrai nom Pierre Romançon, St-Bénilde est né à Thuret en 1805. Entré chez les frères des écoles chrétiennes, il prend le nom de Bénilde et prononce ses vœux en 1836. Il devint instituteur dans différentes localités d’Auvergne : à Riom, Aurillac, Clermont, Billom, puis directeur d’une école à Saugues. Il se distingua par sa rigueur et par une grande affection portée aux enfants. Il fut canonisé en 1867 et un pèlerinage lui est dédié chaque année en juillet.

Prefer an aerial view of the lowlands from the saddle? Try a mountain bike route like the Tour de Chaumont, where you’ll struggle to keep your eyes off the views and on the trail in front of you! More in the mood for some positive waves? Ride a riverside MTB trail like the Morge route, or a lakeside run like the Pulvérières trail, stopping off for a refreshing swim along the way.
