Vulcania exploration park

Discover the natural phenomena of our beautiful planet!

Just 20 minutes from Riom, in the heart of the volcanoes of the Chaîne des Puys, the Vulcania exploration park invites young and old explorers alike to experience an adventure unlike any other in Europe. Set off to discover volcanoes and natural phenomena for an exciting visit! Pitoufeu, the children’s friend, as well as Matt the explorer and Professor Yapadrisk will be waiting for you as soon as you arrive and are sure to want you to join their teams!

Adventurer or scientist? Only your visit and the result of the “Which hero are you?” game will tell.
At the end of the game, you’ll receive your Adventurer or Scientist badge!

Everything you need to know about our Auvergne giants, the volcanoes of Auvergne and the world

Discover the fascinating mysteries of Planet Earth, starting with volcanism. With Premier envol, follow the exploration of a golden eagle in the Auvergne sky on a 180° screen to get a better idea of the extent of the Chaîne des Puys.
Witness the awakening of these volcanoes, so peaceful today, with the Réveil des géants d’Auvergne.
Immerse yourself in the legends associated with volcanism with Sacred Volcanoes, an animation featuring a host of special effects.

Did you know? The majority of terrestrial volcanoes are underwater. The Abyss Explorer animation invites you to immerse yourself in this fascinating world, in the darkness where little-known animal species live.

Fun  Entertainment

For its part, the Volcano Drones animation shows us all the help drones can give volcanologists… without neglecting the show! Surprises in store!
A brand new workshop in the Experience Corner, Drones and Volcanologists, gives visitors a better understanding of the reality of this profession and all that today’s technologies have to offer.

Finally, since 2020, Mission Vulcania – Operation Rescue has been offering visitors the chance to join Matt the Explorer and Professor Yapadrisk on a wild volcanic adventure in search of Pitoufeu. The whole family will love it… with the added bonus of the voices of Aldebert, Ours and Élodie Frégé!

These activities are accompanied by a Chaîne des Puys Exhibition, which the Park’s scientific guides will be delighted to talk about.
Because learning while having fun is the real DNA of Vulcania!

Not to be missed  Vulcania planetarium

Discover the largest planetarium in France! With its immersive dome 22 m in diameter and 314 seats (including 8 accessible to people with reduced mobility), Vulcania’s planetarium offers a fascinating exploration of Space.

Discover the sky with 2 films for all ages:

  • VAST: a cosmic journey through Space and Time.
  • Noisettes: follow two squirrels in search of nuts in the Solar System.

2 animations presented by a scientific animator enhance the experience:

  • The volcano-solid adventure: discover volcanoes, storms and cyclones on Earth and elsewhere in the Universe.
  • Tonight in the sky: learn to recognise constellations, planets and galaxies with the naked eye or telescope.

Finally, 2 fun and educational workshops complete the visit:

  • In the shoes of an astronaut: explore life in the ISS, rocket launches and the challenges of Space.
  • Under the Sun: discover the characteristics of our star and its impact on our daily lives.

Explore the world of natural phenomena

What if Namazu wasn’t just a legend?
Yes, this giant catfish, which according to Japanese legend lives in the bowels of the earth, has found refuge at Vulcania!

A family roller-coaster fully integrated into its natural environment, Namazu invites Vulcania explorers to visit the scientific base of a team of seismologists… and then to join them in the field. As you can imagine, nothing will go according to plan, and a few thrills await you! An attraction named “best new attraction in Europe” by Parksmania!

An interpretation area on earthquakes is available at the end of the attraction, and to find out everything there is to know about this natural phenomenon, visitors can visit the “Earthquakes” Exhibition, with commentaries by scientific animators at certain times of the day.

Discover natural phenomena on the big screen

One of the biggest screens in Europe is used here to show breathtaking images, from the film “Les Diables des Volcans” (The Devils of the Volcanoes ) retracing the lives and adventures of the famous volcanologist couple Maurice and Katia Krafft, to the extraordinary “Ouragan” (Hurricane)! Here you can follow Hurricane Lucy from its birth in Africa to its devastating arrival in Cuba.

Get excited about Earth in Space

Want to find out more about the history of our planet? Parc Vulcania offers you no less than 650m2 full of technology and emotion for a discovery of Machine Earth.

To continue your learning, head to Planète dévoilée for a 30-minute interactive world tour in the company of a scientific animator. The icing on the cake is that you’re the one in control, choosing which volcanic destinations you want to visit! With a 12-metre-long screen and very high definition, it’s sure to be a splendid trip!

And that’s just a foretaste, because in 2023 Vulcania will be inaugurating the largest Planetarium in France. This is the perfect opportunity for young and old alike to light up the stars once and for all!

 Dragons to explain volcanoes!

Vulcania is putting dragons in the spotlight, because yes, there was a time when science couldn’t explain everything.
And so these mythical creatures were often called upon to unravel certain mysteries that were unsolvable at the time… And so Dragon Ride, Vulcania Park’s cult dynamic 3D animation, has been revived since 2020 with Dragon Ride 2.

8 impressive dragons await you on a wooded trail through this unforgettable Forest of Dragons!

La cité des enfants, in partnership with the Cité des Sciences

A place of experimentation on a variety of themes, the Children’s City will allow volcanologists in short pants, from 3 to 7 years old, to have fun while assimilating scientific knowledge. Experiments, experiments: a 300 m² area is dedicated to 3-7 year-olds. The aim is to make the most of your visit to Vulcania so that your youngsters have magical, enriching memories of their adventures!

All these adventures will give your little ones the chance to handle, touch, build and observe what flows, shines and makes noise… It’s an opportunity for you to share these wonderful moments of discovery with them.

The 6-12 year olds will also be given an explorer’s notebook to take home with them as a souvenir of what they’ve experienced at Vulcania… And there should be plenty of souvenirs to go around!

  • How old do you have to be to visit Vulcania?

All children are welcome at Vulcania! The Children’s City is especially recommended for children aged 3 to 7. With over 300m2 to discover volcanoes and science, you can be sure that they’ll leave amazed! A minimum height is required for certain dynamic activities, but this does not apply to all attractions. So you can enjoy the park as a family with children of all ages.

New at  The river of minerals

Aimed at children aged 4 and over, this family activity mimics the experience of goldpanners. Each little explorer will be equipped with a sieve and a shovel. The children then have to “wash” the river sand with the water that flows through a 20-metre-long sluice to collect the minerals. An identification card will tell them more about their precious harvest.
