6 must-do summer activities in Puy-de-Dôme

When holidays rhyme with pleasure! Make all your dreams of escape and freedom come true in the heart of the Auvergne, at Terra Volcana! The Puy-de-Dôme has so many little and big pleasures for you to enjoy with your family or friends.

1. Let yourself be guided by the events organised by the Tourist Office

Fancy a gourmet trip? Here you can treat your legs, your head and your taste buds to an accompanied sunset walk through the heart and foothills of the Auvergne volcanoes, accompanied by a tasting of local produce… because Auvergne gastronomy is well worth it! You’re guaranteed to get a wow-factor from the breathtaking panoramas!

Throughout the summer, the Terra Volcana team will also be putting on themed activities such as a massage walk, wine evenings, gourmet walks, dramatised tours and accompanied electric mountain bike outings. The icing on the cake is that all these activities are available at low prices, from just €5 per person!

2. Keeping abreast of summer events

Looking for an exciting summer of poetry, music and theatre? In Terra Volcana, tourism rhymes with culture and conviviality, with a wide range of festivals and events.

Music lovers, concert-goers and theatre-lovers beware! Here’s a non-exhaustive list of events not to be missed:

  • Les Frénésies in Riom, Les Vol’Zic and the Vinzelles programme in Volvic, Place d’été in Châtel-Guyon and Les Nuits du Cloître in Mozac, with open-air concerts every week!
  • Les Volcaniques Festival in Saint-Bonnet-Près-Riom in early July
  • Le Festival musical et théâtral du Guérinet at the Château du Guérinet in July
  • The Ça bouge Festival in Marsat at the end of August… and many more!

3. Discover an exhibition at the Musée Mandet

Plunge into the heart of art and design at the Musée Mandet in Riom! Located on rue de l’Hôtel-de-Ville, the museum is housed in two magnificently preserved town houses. With around 6,000 items bringing together painting, sculpture, furniture and objets d’art, the establishment offers a journey from the XVIᵉ century to contemporary creations.

A perfect outing for families, couples or friends: let yourself be surprised by the union of ancient art and contemporary design in a warm atmosphere full of discoveries.

4. Witness the awakening of a volcano

It’s not every day you get to witness the awakening of a real volcano. At Volcan de Lemptégy, there are even two ways to do it!

Firstly, after visiting the site’s treasures during the day, you can embark on a wide-eyed tour of the Réveil du Volcan. This illuminated and magical night-time tour follows the adventures of the Lapilli fox through 9 stages. Mapping, exceptional sound and light effects… The show is total and envelops the Lemptégy Volcano in a truly magical atmosphere!

Finally, the Lemptégy site has developed a new range of accommodation: lodges located above the volcano, as close as possible to this giant of fire that became a quarry after the Second World War. Sleeping on the slopes of a volcano, in comfort, is an extraordinary experience, isn’t it?

5. Starting out on the GR441 from Volvic

Feeling restless? Head to the Parc de la Source Volvic for the great adventure of the GR441®, Tour de la Chaîne des Puys!

On the programme for this volcanic loop: no less than 114km awaits you, with a cumulative vertical drop of 2650 metres and some wild emotions!

Over 6 days, the mythical volcanoes of the Chaîne des Puys will be revealed one after the other, along breathtaking panoramas. The first of them? Thepuy de la Nugère, the source of the famous Volvic stone, the puys de Jume and de la Coquille, and the puy des Gouttes with its breathtaking panorama of the puy de Dôme, the highest point in this chain of volcanoes.

6. Taking part in a lava enamelling workshop ... and bring your volcano home!

A 100% local artistic technique, enamelling on lava transforms Volvic stone into a work of art that lasts almost forever!

An introductory workshop in the company of one of Terra Volcana’s enthusiastic local artists will give you the chance to really appreciate this friendly and peaceful activity.

Great news! These workshops take place all summer long.

Count on around 2 hours for this very zen experience offered by a number of art craftsmen, as close as possible to the volcanic stone quarries: the Diynamik and Filhouette et Cœur de pierre workshops in Volvic and theJuste pour Toi workshop in Châtel-Guyon.
